Freelance identities, built with the client
Alongside my full-time roles, I take on a few brand projects through Ryan Thorp Design. Both of these came through people I know, and both ended with a set of brand guidelines so the client could use the identity on their own.

Mattatuck Scout Reservation
My friend Noah Cross works with younger scouts at Camp Mattatuck. When the camp became Mattatuck Scout Reservation, the rebrand was a chance to rethink the badge itself. The new housing shape leans into scout iconography, and the triangle “A” from the wordmark became a mark of its own.
I also brought Noah into naming the colors.

Logo system
One badge that holds up at any size
The primary logo carries the establishment date. The secondary logo drops it so the badge stays readable when it gets small, and below that the wordmark works on its own.

Color
A palette named with the people who use it
Noah and I named the five colors together. Campfire Red is the brand color, Night Trail Black stands in wherever black would go, and Sailboat White is the off-white the badge sits on.

Brand marks
The “A” as a mark of its own
The triangle from the wordmark, the badge shape and its outline work as standalone marks on any of the brand colors. The guidelines call for high contrast every time: never Sailboat White on pure white, never Night Trail Black on pure black.

Type
Textured for the badge, clean for the copy
Brother 1816 Printed sets the logo and headlines, and its texture shows whenever the logo runs at standard size or larger. Brother 1816 without the texture handles body copy, where it needs to read easily.

Samantha Scavo Photography and Interior Design
Kristin Concannon, who I worked with at HqO and Nasuni, referred Samantha to me. Samantha wanted one identity that could carry both her photography and her interior design work.
We met throughout the process to pin down what each side of her work needed and which colors felt like her. The four corner brackets frame her name like a camera viewfinder, for the photography. The housing shapes read as paint, a soft swatch and a brushstroke, for the interior design.

Logo system
Two housings for two kinds of use
The secondary logos set the primary logo inside a paint-like housing. The smooth shape is for screens, like her website and social profiles. The brushstroke carries more detail, so it is saved for business cards and larger print.

Bristle Black carries the logo. Artichoke Green fills the housing shapes and is also available as a Sherwin-Williams paint. White is used for knockouts and anywhere white would normally go.
